Free Forestry Assistance Program
The Houghton/Keweenaw Conservation offers Free Forestry Assistance to private landowners.
If you are interested in obtaining help in any of the following areas, or would just like to
know more about your property, give us a call at (906) 482-0214. The service is available to
people who own land in Houghton or Keweenaw Counties.
-
Forest Management - Advice on acheiving your goals for the property (wildlife, timber
production, aesthetics, recreation, hunting, etc...)
-
Referrals - We provide referrals to consulting foresters in the area for the writing
of management plans, timber harvest administration, etc... Referrals to public
agencies for cost share programs are also available.
-
Attracting Songbirds - Did you know that through the creation of snags (standing dead
trees), coarse woody debris (downed trees), shrub and tree planting that you can improve
songbird habitat?
-
Timber Harvesting - If you plan to have a timber harvest on your property we can provide
guidelines for doing it properly. A well managed hardwood forest can provide income to the landowner
every 15 years or so indefinitely!! The general rule of thumb is to "take the worst" and "leave the best".
Eventually you'll have a forest with a very high percentage of high quality trees.
-
Firewood Cutting - Do you want to cut firewood AND manage for timber?
-
Restoration Forestry - Hemlock, white pine and yellow birch are less common today than in the
past. We can help with restoring these valuable tree species.
-
Tree/Shrub Planting - Do you want to increase diversity and improve wildlife habitat? We can
assist you with selecting the right tree and shrub species.
-
Insect & Disease Problems - Help with insect and disease diagnosis/treatment is available.
