Jim Sweeting, forester and wildlife biologist for the Houghton/Keweenaw, Ontonagon, and Gogebic Conservation Districts, will present detailed information on eight of the best shrubs/small tree species for attracting wildlife to landscapes in the western U.P. Plan to attend the March 17 workshop in the conference room of the UPPCO Building in Houghton, 600 East Lakeshore Drive. A $10 registration fee will be charged. Jim holds a bachelor of science degree in forestry from Michigan Tech and a master of science degree in wildlife science from South Dakota State University. He has lived and worked with natural resources in the western U.P. for 25 years. His farm in Chassell is used as a demonstration area for a variety of wildlife management practices that provide quality habitat for migratory birds, deer, grouse, songbirds, and other wildlife. What is that plant? The Gratiot
Lake Conservancy is sponsoring a botany workshop scheduled for Saturday,
May 29, and Sunday, May 30. This local flora class, to be taught in the
Keweenaw by botanist Janet Marr, is open to anyone interested in learning
how to identify local native plants. The workshop will be taught at a
beginning/intermediate level and a nominal fee will be charged. If you
