Joseph and Mary Lizzadro Preserve
This 24-acre parcel with 643 feet of Lake Superior shoreline is located on Hwy M-26 between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor in Eagle Harbor Township in Keweenaw County, Michigan. The property is highlighted as a high quality bedrock plant community in the Michigan Natural Features Inventory Study of Bedrock Shorelines. In 2003, Michigan Coastal Management Program, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, awarded HKCD a land acquisition grant of $323,900 which included a local match of 25%, contributed by a grandchild of Joseph and Mary Lizzadro.
Bete Grise Preserve
The Bete Grise Preserve includes 1104 acres of pristine dune swale wetlands, 7500 feet of Lake Superior shoreline and significant frontage on the sloughs of Lac La Belle. This area will be preserved in its natural state in perpetuity. Michigan Natural Features Inventory long ago identified Bete Grise as the highest quality dune swale wetland system remaining in the Upper Great Lakes. While ecologically significant, the area known as Bete Grise South is also very beautiful. During the 1990s the buildable beach area was targeted for an upscale residential development by International Paper (IP). Over the next five years, many organizations and individuals worked together, donating time and skills, to raise funds and write grants to buy Bete Grise. In 2004, grant funding of $1,447,000 was provided by Great Lakes Coastal Restoration and National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grants. The Nature Conservancy negotiated the sale and provided the 25% match for these grants. Many individuals and organizations partnered to create this preserve: HKCD, The Nature Conservancy, Keweenaw Land Trust, South Shore Association, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
