BEAKED HAZELNUT Corylus cornuta
Our native hazelnut is very valuable to ruffed grouse as a winter food source. Provides cover to a variety of birds. Has an upright, many branched form and can produce thickets. This shrub grows on well-drained soils, attains a height of about 6’ and has edible nuts.

COMMON PURPLE LILAC Syringa vulgaris
Fragrant lilac colored blossoms in May. Can reach heights of 12-20 feet.

EASTERN NINEBARK Physocarpus opulifolius
A native wetland edge species growing up to 8 feet tall and up to 15 feet across. Use full for borders and screens. The seeds are highly sought by songbirds and grouse. Prefers full sun.

ELDERBERRY Sambucus canadensis
A great wildlife shrub which grows best in rich, moist low land soils. Produces many stems which grow to a height of 8-12 feet. The large clusters of tiny black berries are sought after by many bird species. An outstanding native wildlife plant.

HIGHBUSH CRANBERRY Viburnum trilobum
Highbush CranberryA beautiful native shrub for landscaping or wildlife plantings. Produces attractive white flowers and scarlet colored fruit which birds eat in late winter. Tolerates a wide variety of soil sites and does best with full sunlight. Can reach a height of 10 feet.

NANNYBERRY Viburnum lentago
A large native flowering shrub reaching heights of 15-20 feet. Grows in upland sites as well as along wetland edges. The white flower clusters produced in June and followed by bluish/black berries ripening in fall. The fruit is very desirable to wildlife.

RED OSIER DOGWOOD Cornus stolonifera or sericea
Red DogwoodA valuable native plant for landscaping or wildlife. Grows best in wet or moist sites where it reaches a height of 7-10 feet. Excellent stream bank stabilizer. Stems retain their brilliant red color throughout the year. Valuable for wildlife food and cover.

 

SERVICEBERRY Amelanchier canadensis
ServiceberryAn excellent native wildlife shrub growing up to 25 feet tall. The white flowers and the first to bloom in spring and the sweet purple berries are highly sought after by birds. These berries are also edible for humans. Does best with full sun and should be planted on well-drained soils. Also a great landscaping shrub.

WASHINGTON HAWTHORNE Crataegus phaenopyrum
This landscape tree grows to 12 feet on a single stem. Each spring white blossoms cover the tree followed by thousands of red/orange tiny apples. The red fruit is readily eaten by songbirds and game birds alike. Grows well on a wide variety of soils. Plant in full sun. Excellent for both wildlife and landscaping purposes.
