AMERICAN MOUNTAIN ASH Sorbus americana
A great native ornamental tree growing up to 30 feet. Has brilliant orange/red fruit that often lasts into winter. Plant on well drained sites. Many bird species are attracted to the fruit during fall and winter. An excellent ornamental and wildlife tree.

ASPEN—QUAKING Populus tremuloides
Also known as aspen and golden aspen. Mature size of 20–60 feet. Grows in moist soils provided with adequate moisture and sunlight. Goldish yellow leaves in the fall. Wildlife: The staple tree for the habitat of ruffed grouse, which feed on the bud and catkin. This high protein tree is an important feed source for deer and beaver.

BASSWOOD—AMERICAN Tilia Americana
Also known as American linden. Mature height of 60–80 feet. Wildlife: An important nectar source for honeybees.

BIRCH PAPER (WHITE) Betula papyrifera
Also known as canoe birch, silver birch, and white birch. Mature height is 80 feet. Prefers cool moist climates. Shiny brown bark when young, turning bright white with age. Seed is eaten by the ruffed grouse and many others.

BLACK OR RUM CHERRY Prunus serotina
A medium-sized native hardwood tree. The wood is prized and the fruit is used by a wide variety of birds and mammals. An excellent addition to a maple forest if you want to improve plant diversity and wildlife habitat at the same time.

NORTHERN RED OAK Quercus rubra
Our only native oak tree. A beautiful, fast growing oak with a broad crown. Thrives on any well-drained soil including sandy sites. Needs full or partial sun. The acorns are very valuable to deer, bear, wood ducks and other wildlife. Planting oak is an excellent way to add plant and wildlife diversity to your forest stand or yard.

MAPLE—RED Acer rubrum
Also known as soft maple and swamp maple. Mature size of 75–80 feet. Likes moist soils, grows fast, red leaves in autumn.

MAPLE—SUGAR Acer saccharum
Our most valuable hardwood tree in the Upper Peninsula. Used for timber, maple syrup or as a shade tree. Attains heights of 70-100 feet and is very shade tolerant. Leaves produce gorgeous fall colors.

SARGENT (ROSELOW) CRABAPPLE Malus sargentii, variety "Roselow"
A compact, rounded and densely branched flowering crab reaching a height of about 8 feet. Pink buds produce white flowers in mid-May and abundant dark red fruit by fall. The small fruit is attractive to a variety of birds. This tree does well on a variety of soils and is an excellent wildlife planting.
