Plants native to the soils and climate of our specific area provide the best overall food sources for wildlife, while generally requiring less fertilizer, less water, and less effort in controlling pests. Learn more about native plants and seeds through the Native Plant Program.

SEEDS

The following seed varieties are native to Michigan and supplied to us by the Michigan Association of Conservation Districts.


Native Butterfly Packet
Native Butterfly MixThis variety blooms May through October, attracts wildlife and will thrive wherever planted, in soils ranging from wet to dry, sand to clay. Gardeners will enjoy a rainbow of colors, sizes and textures.

 

Native Songbird Meadow Packet
Native Songbird MixThis easy-to-grow mixture of popular perennials and annuals will attract a large variety of songbirds to your garden all season. Some varieties may even be left to dry in your garden to produce natural bird feeders.

 

Native Wildflower Packet
Michigan Native Wildflower MixtureThis variety of native wildflowers blooms May through October, attracts wildlife, and will thrive wherever planted, in soils ranging from wet to dry, sand to clay. Gardeners will enjoy a rainbow of colors, sizes and textures. Contains: Perennial Lupine, Purple Coneflower, Lance-leaved Coreopsis, White False Indigo, rough Blazing Star, Eastern Columbine, Little Bluestem, New England Aster Black-eyed Susan, Stiff Goldenrod, Cardinal Flower. 3.5 grams/30-50 square feet.

PLANTS (Native wildflower plants come in 3" containers.)

Native plants have evolved here over thousands of years and are well suited to our climate and site, resistant to disease and pests and require little or no special treatment. By using them we provide food and habitat for our native animals. When using native plants it is best to use those from your local area.

Bergamot
BergamotThis fragrant member of the Mint family produces an abundance of picturesque purple flowers. Hummingbirds flock to it.

 

Black-Eyed Susan
Black-Eyed SusanThis best known of all the prairie flowers is also the easiest to grow! Not picky about soil conditions and will grow on almost any site.

 

 

Blue Flag Iris
Blue Flag IrisThis beautiful flower of wet meadows and marshes forms large clumps of sword-shaped leaves from which arise blue flowering stalks.

 

Columbine
ColumbineTwo flowers in one! An inner yellow flower is surrounded by an elegantly spurred red outer flower.
