What is Forestry?
Simply put, forestry is the art and science of cultivating, managing, and caring for forests. However, applying it is much more elaborate given how complex the system that makes up a forest really is. There are many factors that must be considered when managing the woods as all the parts of the environment are linked in a way that is quite intricate and as such, any action taken produces an effect that will ripple throughout the entire system. It is the job of forestry professionals to understand these complex systems as best as possible and be able to provide a means of management that allows for the landowners goals and objectives to be met while minimizing the negative adverse effects on the forest system resulting from that management.
Generally speaking, good, sustainable, forestry performs management in a way that fulfills the needs of the current owner and still leaves a healthy forest such that the next owner has the same (or more) opportunities as the first. Here at the HKCD, we freely provide various forms of technical assistance, programmatic incentives, and connection to a wide assortment of knowledgeable people so that you, the private forest owner, is able to implement good forestry on your land such that you and those to come will be able to both benefit from and enjoy the great outdoors.
