Now Hiring: Forestry Assistance Program (FAP) Forester

The Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District (HKCD) is seeking a dedicated Forestry Assistance Program Forester to support private landowners and promote healthy, sustainable forest management in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.

This full-time, grant-funded position is based out of our office in Houghton, MI and plays a vital role in connecting landowners to resources, technical guidance, and conservation programs that protect and restore our local forest ecosystems.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the first point of contact for forest landowners and resource professionals

  • Provide on-site and in-office technical assistance

  • Lead outreach events: workshops, field days, and demonstrations

  • Facilitate forester referral program

  • Support reforestation and invasive species management

  • Collaborate with mills and local agencies

  • Assist with Qualified Forest Program applications

  • Contribute to HKCD programs like tree sales and public education


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Forestry (required)

  • Strong communication and public engagement skills

  • Knowledge of forest health, wildlife management, and conservation practices

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for site visits

  • GIS and Microsoft Office skills preferred


Compensation and Benefits

  • Pay: $23–$25/hour, depending on experience and certification

  • 40 hours/week with flexible scheduling for occasional evening or weekend events

  • Mileage reimbursement, 10 paid holidays, sick/annual leave accrual

  • 5% retirement match, $100 bi-weekly health stipend
