Now Hiring: Forestry Assistance Program (FAP) Forester
The Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District (HKCD) is seeking a dedicated Forestry Assistance Program Forester to support private landowners and promote healthy, sustainable forest management in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.
This full-time, grant-funded position is based out of our office in Houghton, MI and plays a vital role in connecting landowners to resources, technical guidance, and conservation programs that protect and restore our local forest ecosystems.
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as the first point of contact for forest landowners and resource professionals
Provide on-site and in-office technical assistance
Lead outreach events: workshops, field days, and demonstrations
Facilitate forester referral program
Support reforestation and invasive species management
Collaborate with mills and local agencies
Assist with Qualified Forest Program applications
Contribute to HKCD programs like tree sales and public education
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Forestry (required)
Strong communication and public engagement skills
Knowledge of forest health, wildlife management, and conservation practices
Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for site visits
GIS and Microsoft Office skills preferred
Compensation and Benefits
Pay: $23–$25/hour, depending on experience and certification
40 hours/week with flexible scheduling for occasional evening or weekend events
Mileage reimbursement, 10 paid holidays, sick/annual leave accrual
5% retirement match, $100 bi-weekly health stipend
