Large tree, reaching heights of up 100-150 feet at maturity (on ideal sites) and long lived. Grows on a wide range of site conditions including: very acidic to basic sites, silty loams, well drained (sandy) soils, and on ridges or mounds in poorly drained sites. Moderately shade tolerant and moderately fast growing. State tree of Michigan.
