Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR)
In addition to all the work they do managing the state’s public forest lands and facilities, the DNR also offers several programs and services and many additional resources for private landowners. See the links below for more information about the private lands forestry related management programs they offer. If looking for a forester and or your local DNR Customer Service Center, click on the buttons at the bottom of the page for more information
Commercial Forest Program
This program is designed for those looking to manage their land for timber and receive benefits in the form of tax breaks, similar to the Qualified Forest Program (QFP). However, unlike QFP, lands enrolled in this program must, among many things, be accessible to the public for hunting, trapping and fishing. Follow the title link for more information.
Forest Stewardship Program
For those looking to get a Forest Management Plan written for their forest, this may be found to be quite useful. This program connects private landowners with professional foresters who will survey the landowner’s land and write up a forest management plan that, if followed, should manage the land in light of the landowner’s objectives and accomplish their goals across their forested landscape. Follow the title link for more information.
Private Lands Program
This program seeks to provide eligible private landowners with technical and financial assistance to help them manage the habitat on their property in such a way that will benefit a variety of wildlife. Click on the title link for more information.
Forest Legacy Program
If you are looking to protect your land from conversion to a non-forest use and/or development, this program may be of interest. Through one of two means—land transference (sale) to the state or conservation easements—selected lands will be protected from future development/significant use alteration. However, given the nature of this program and that it is a nationally competitive process, it is not as quick/easy to enroll in as some other programs. More information can be found by clicking the title link.
Other DNR Resources
In addition to the forestry programs listed above, the DNR also offers many other resources for private land owners. Click the links below to explore and learn more.
